Nixon, Nevada is a small town set on State Route 447. It is approximately 18 miles from Rt80 heading north towards Gerlach, Nevada. It was named in honor of Senator George Stuart Nixon (R), who represented Nevada in the US Senate from 1905-1912. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation was established in 1859 but was not officially recognized until 1879. It is an Indian Reservation and Nixon is the seat of tribal government of the Pyramid Lake Paiutes. It also has a terrific Tribal Museum and Visitor Center. Its main income is catching speeders heading north to Gerlach and for two days after Burning Man it is the world's biggest car wash and trash collection depot. While the town leaves a lot to be desired it does have the Indian Museum, something worth visiting, and an outstanding High School Campus, solar powered and everything. And look out for those neat late model SUV Cop Cars.
There is little else worth while in Nixon other than to say its inhabitants are very friendly and ready to tell visitors about the area and their Paiute history. And, the town is filled with non working cars, trucks and trailers - everywhere. As you leave Nixon you can catch a glimpse of the Marble Bluff Dam over the hill on the left. It is set up to assist fish on their run up the Truckee River for spawning.
