The Needles are a group of Tufa formations at the north end of Pyramid Lake. It can be easily access by heading north out of the town of Sutcliffe, Nevada on Rt 445. There is an active Geyser right on the shoreline amongst some really unique rock formations. Unfortunately the Needles is closed to everyone other than Paiute Tribal members. Perhaps some day it will be reopened. While you may not be able to enter the Needles area there is plenty to see from the road running just to the west. Rt 445 offers several nice photo opportunities. The tufa formations found at this lake are some of the lake's most distinctive natural features. These formations are calcium carbonate deposits formed by percolation of hot springs over the centuries.
